Nellie R Stevens is an extremely popular smaller holly tree of reasonably vigorous growth. It features glossy dark green leaves with wavy margins, with less spines than many other cultivars, and being partially self fertile means it will produce reddy orange berries irrespective of whether a male pollinator is nearby. Fully mature specimens can reach 4 to 6 metres high and 2 to 4 metres wide. The natural shape is a conical form, but this tree takes clipping very well, and is therefore ideal for topiarisation. Shallow rooted, this tree will thrive in most soils and conditions except very waterlogged. May require some shelter or protection whilst young, until established.
