A rare beast, Fatsia japonica is equally at home as a houseplant, or in a sheltered spot in the garden. Preferring a well drained but moist compost, the castor oil plant is a vigorous architectural plant, with beautifuly large glossy, palmate leaves whch will make quite a statement wherever you place it. It is unfussy about light levels or soil conditions, thriving in partial shade, but will survive in full sun or even full shade. Water frequently in the growing months, keeping the compost adequately moist, not wet. In the autumn reduce watering and whilst not letting the plant dry out the compost can be kept nearly dry to avoid root rot. A very easy houseplant for beginners.
