This is a real eye catcher of a poppy with it's large velvety, scarlet red blooms in late spring and early summer. The blooms sit atop softly hairy, divided foliage rather reminiscent of thistles. The flower buds curl from the centre of the plants with poised intent before bursting open in a blaze of red with a black centre, and a dark blotch at the base of the petal. Even the seedheads afterwards are dramatic, and much loved by flower arrangers, although if left on the plant they will self seed quite happily to provide you with even more plants. Grows 70 to 80 cm high by 30 to 40cm wide. Prefers a moist and rich soil in sun or very light shade.
