Also called wavy grass, Deschampsia is a tough grass which forms hummocks of narrow and rough green foliage in any damp or wet reasonable soil. It's real delight though is the 'veil' of fine airy straw, broze green, coloured swaying flowerheads or spikelets, which appear in June and July and will then last well into winter. Grows between 60 and 100cm high and can spread between 100 and 500cm. Grow in full sun or partial shade. Great for prairie planting, as a foil for other herbaceous perennials or even as a focal point in a oot. A very versatile plant indeed. Cut all stems close to ground lecvel in early spring before new gropwth commences.
