Salvia Royal Bumble is a semi evergreen shrubby variety of the species, which is hardy throughout most of the UK except in the most extreme of winters. Like most in the family, Royal Bumble may be damaged by hard frosts, so a sheltered spot is advisable in full sun or semi shade, and avoid cutting back in autumn, but leave until the risk of frost is over in the spring, then simply tidy up dead stems back to a good pair of buds. Even if the top growth is completely frosted they will often re sprout from the base, as long as they are protected by the old foliage, and a good mulch of organic matter. Salvia Bumble features large glowing red flowers over a very long period from spring through to autumn, which are loved by bees, and stand out wonderfully against the mid green foliage and reddy black stems. Likes a well drained site in any reasonable garden soil, where it may grow up to 75cm high by 50cm wide. Perfect along a path side, as a feature in a border, or even in a pot.
